The Rural Municipality of Breadalbane is launching a new community housing initiative, supported by the Green Municipal Fund’s Sustainable Affordable Housing program and in partnership with the Province of PEI. Our goal is to explore practical ways to add affordable, energy-efficient apartments through renovations to existing buildings.

As part of this project, we’re inviting residents to let us know if they’d be interested in having an assessment done on their home to explore the possibility of adding affordable apartment units. Up to five properties will be selected to receive assessments at no charge to the homeowner. These assessments will look at both structural and energy factors to help understand what could be possible for creating new rental units.

Homeowners whose properties are selected may also have the opportunity to work with a qualified architect to develop conceptual floor plans showing how new apartments could be integrated into their homes.

While this project focuses on exploring opportunities and developing design concepts, renovation or construction costs are not included in the available funding. For residents who are interested in exploring a cooperative housing model, there may be additional funding programs and support available to assist with organizing and developing that type of initiative.

If any of the concepts developed through this process move forward to construction, the properties involved would need to be sold to a new housing authority (to be established) that would oversee ownership and management of the new affordable rental units.
